One thing you might not know about tennis elbow is its official name: Lateral epicondylitis. Unfortunately, saying these two words isn’t the most complicated thing about this condition. For starters, most of the people “tennis” elbow affects have never even played the game!

Continue reading to learn more about the causes and symptoms of tennis elbow and also, how chiropractic care is a great option for relieving the pain associated with – and, ultimately, in resolving the underlying causes of – tennis elbow.

Tennis Elbow Causes

Broadly speaking, tennis elbow has two causes: Overuse and trauma. On one hand, athletic activity makes experiencing injury-inducing trauma to the elbow more likely. Yet, while the gripping and grasping motions that cause tennis elbow are similar to the ones tennis players use to hold their rackets,  decidedly non-athletic occupations (plumbing, butchery and painting, to name a few) are more often to blame for lateral epicondylitis than tennis itself.

Tennis Elbow Symptoms

Pain, not surprisingly, is the primary symptom of tennis elbow, specifically on the outside of the elbow, a bony region called the lateral epicondyle. Pain can occur in idle situations, but is most often felt while performing the same types of gripping and grasping motions that cause tennis elbow in the first place. Although pain usually begins in the outside aspect of the elbow, it can travel as far down as the hand, leading to a large area of pain and discomfort.

Chiropractic Treatment for Tennis Elbow

The hallmark of chiropractic treatment is getting to (and, more importantly, correcting) the root cause of a particular injury. It’s not surprising, then, that when it comes to tennis elbow, my goal as an Austin chiropractor involves looking for subluxation, i.e. part of your elbow joint that has moved out of place. Other times, the cause is far away from your elbow. In some cases, tennis elbow can result from issues with nerves that start in your cervical or thoracic spines!
