woman rubbing temples to try and relieve pain from migraineThe word “migraine” is probably one of the most commonly-used health terms, whether you’re describing the reason you need to go home from work, or explaining to someone the condition that keeps your husband or wife up at night.

But what is a migraine, really? And how does it differ from an ordinary headache? Since migraines are one of the many conditions I treat in my Austin chiropractic clinic, I can definitely clear the answers to these questions up for you.

What is a Migraine?

Although “migraine” is often used in conjunction with “headache,” the former actually describes a neurological disorder, of which moderate to severe headaches are a common symptom. To put it another way, migraine is a disorder that causes headaches, and headaches, which can often be so severe they seem like they’ll never end, are its best-known effect.

Symptoms of Migraines

Unfortunately, headaches are by no means the only effect of the migraine condition. Migraines can also lead to gastrointestinal unrest, from vomiting to nausea, and even sensitivity to light (photophobia) or sound (phonophobia). No matter how your migraine manifests itself, you’re unlikely to be feeling very good by the time it’s over. And it could take some time: Migraines can last 72 hours, or even more in some cases!
